Repeating Kazan

24 May 2005

We woke early again.  it was a combination of our body clock (train lag), noise and light.  We dozed and took it easy until breakfast around 0800.  Today’s kinda our spare day in case things don’t go smoothly.  So we didn’t have any big plans.  Perhaps just repeat some sightseeing and explore a bit more.

After breakfast, we ran into Sarah and Liz.  They are leaving in the afternoon by train and we offered to keep their bags for them until they go.

We repeated our exploration of Kazan by walking around the base of the Kremlin.  The light was better today.  We had better luck with the museum too as it was indeed open.  It wasn’t worth staying too long there because there were only a few stands of photos captioned in Russian.

We could have paid extra to see Catherine’s chariot but I had already sat in a replica of that in the mall yesterday  😉

We walked near the University and were looking for an internet cafe.  Some uni girls offered to take us to one.  It turned out to be the same one as yesterday that ended abruptly, and the desk ergonomics wasn’t suitable for a longer stay.  We thanked them but didn’t go in.

With time to kill, we hopped on a ram to take us somewhere, anywhere!  It was a cheap way of seeing the city.  But our ride was cut short when we spotted another internet cafe.  We hopped off and wrote a long letter home.  It got stiflingly hot in there and I felt dehydrated.

We walked back to Baumana Street mall where we met Sarah and Liz outside McDonald’s.  We settled for lunch at Dom Chaya again.  They returned to our room for a shower while we rested.  They were on the other side of the hotel which had communal showers which they hadn’t found.

After dinner, we took a walk on the banks of the Volga River or the Kazanska, I’m not so sure as one joins into the other.  There were lots of flies.  The water was a bit yucky but it didn’t stop some people from fishing.  It was quite nice with the evening sun.  We grabbed an ice cream next to the hotel before going back in to prepare for tomorrow’s early departure.
