Being the weekend, Kristina and I took a short trip to Bayt Baws, also spelled Bait Baus (and numerous other ways I guess).  We took a dabab (van) to Hadda and change to another to Bayt Baws and then another uphill to the old town.

Once we were in the old town, it felt like a completely different world even though we’re just on the southern edge of Sana’a.  But if we turned around and look back to the north, we’d be immediately reminded that we weren’t far from civilisation.

We walked around the hills and the old town.  While Bayt Baws wasn’t amazing like Kawkaban or Al Hajjarah, it was an easy trip that was doable by public transport.

We stopped for lunch at Hadda on the way back, and bought some Arabic sweets (which I normally refer to as cakes) from the Damascus sweet shop.

Today, I learnt that my school CALES (Centre for Arabic Language and Eastern Studies) and its parent, University of Science and Technology is owned by the Islamic opposition party, Al Islah.  That explains how conservative some staff are, I guess.  Even despite having quite high education.
