City that never sleeps

2 October 2008

I began my exploration of the Big Apple by going up its most famous landmark, arguably.  I went up the Empire State Building …  funny name considering this country had not Empire, Emperor or Empress!

I then continued walking around the skyscrapers and landmarks of Lower Manhattan, then across the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn of course.  I returned to Lower Manhattan to check out the site of the former World Trade Center (Twin Towers) and Wall Street.

At night Times Square came alive in a riot of colours with its neon displays.  It appears Times Square isn’t a square in the sense of a wide open city square or piazza … more like a square in terms of a few city blocks!  Lots of stageshows for the culturally-inclined.  While I didn’t stay out till the wee hours, it did seem like that city that never sleeps.
