Poverty and the US trade embargo

15 October 2008

Apart from the lack of shops, there are signs that Cuba isn’t the most affluent nation:

  • The restaurant in Chinatown churns out the best cream caramel in cut-off cola cans.
  • The restaurant has cut your paper napkin for use by two diners.
  • Car like the 1955 Bel Air still cruise the streets.
  • B&W TVs still grace the living room of some people … but some others have modest flat-screen LCDs.
  • There are shops with dimly-lit desks where people bring in their stuff for repair (eg. rice cookers).
  • Many families are crammed into a two-storey home in the city.

Signs (or otherwise) of the US trade embargo:

  • You never know where your next Coca-Cola is coming from.  Some are made in Mexico, others in China.
  • But ketchup, mustard, jam sometimes are from the USA!!  But other times from Spain or Latin America.
