It was meant to be an early morning start out of Auckland but we found out that the flight to Blenheim on the bigger plane was full …. one of the complications of using staff standby tickets. We managed to get on the 11:15 flight on a smaller and fully-packed aircraft, affording us a leisurely wake-up.
It was a very pretty descent into Blenheim airport swooping above the vineyards nearby. Upon arrival we drove through the vineyards surrounding the airport to the nearby Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. It houses a collection of historic World War I aircraft. Due to its affiliation with Peter Jackson (the film director), the displays draw on the talents of the WETA workshop (the animators of his films).
We overnighted in Picton, which was about half hour away due to finding substantially discounted accommodation.
