I took an excursion out to Klias River today, near Beaufort (2 hours each way) to see the fireflies at night. It was a pricey excursion but there wasn’t much of a choice apart from not doing it!
The programme included more than just the fireflies … there was afternoon tea, boat-safari to view the local animals and dinner before the actual fireflies.
As it turned out the boat-safari was highly interesting. We spotted some large lizards on tree trunks in the swamp; they were easily mistaken for baby crocodiles. There were also plenty of proboscis monkeys (or Orang Belanda in Malay … literally meaning Dutch Man). OMG, their noses are so so so big.
As for the fireflies, I must have been gullible to expect them to light up the trees … err … like Christmas trees. It was more like seeing glitter in the trees. Once I had realigned my expectations, I was in a better place to appreciate this gift from mother nature!

- The tour operator’s premises where one embarks on the river cruise. And dinner is served here too. Coffee anyone? The river water is coffee-coloured.
