Today I went to the Butterfly Farm near Teluk Bahang. The bus ride took me through Batu Ferringhi which is the beach-hotel district. There were some nice resorts and the sea looked quite blue further out but brownish in many parts closer to land … I’ve been told by many that they don’t bother swimming in the sea.
The visit to Butterfly Farm involved a 20 minute walk in the hot sun after hopping off the bus. But it was worth it. Apart from being able to walk amongst many pretty butterflies, there were some big lizards, snakes, scorpions etc … all safely behind glass though. So they have beauties and beasts!
- Beauties on the Bunga Raya (hibiscus), the national flower.
- Another beauty.
- There are so many butterflies … as you walk in, they rest on you (without you knowing). Your instinct may be to slap the tickly / itchy bit … thinking it is a mosquito!
- Scorpions safely behind the glass enclosure (open top … you can put your hands in if you like).
- Alligator turtle with those distinctive ridges on the shell.
- Big lizard.
- Long too … the tail reaches all the way to the bottom of the picture!
- Leaf insect.
- Another leaf insect.
- Rajah Brooke butterfly … always special to Sarawakians.
- Penang has great street food. Sights like these don’t tie up with the fact that it’s the country’s second largest city … when you don’t see this in, say, Kuching.
