Kim has a former teaching colleague, Peter, that moved down to Stewart Island many years ago. We had talked about visiting but it hadn’t happened … until now.
We flew from Auckland to Invercargill (via Christchurch) and waited for what was meant to be three hours for our 20-minute flight from Invercargill to Stewart Island. Invercargill airport is small so it felt like a long wait … and that was only for 2h15 minutes rather than three hours! The pilot (who doubled as check-in agent and tripled as baggage loader) walked round the terminal and rounded everyone up and we left about 40 minutes ahead of schedule.
During the short flight, the weather changed from clear blue to a cloudy grey. It was wet by the time we landed in Stewart Island. 🙁
- Inside the Britten Norman Islander … 9 passengers plus one pilot.
- First glimpse of Stewart Island.
- The entire flight was below 1000 feet … giving us a good view of everything.
- The little town of Oban situated on Half Moon Bay; the big smoke of Stewart Island.
- Peter and Anyta’s home … I call it a mini Gothic Cathedral.
