Moving down the coast

1 August 2014

Above:  I stayed in the old city, high above the crowds (in the background).

I left my accommodation at Kotor as late as possible, around 1045, for Ulcinj. I didn’t want to go too early in case the room at Ulcinj wasn’t ready yet. I walked to the bus station and was on the bus to Ulcinj after a short wait.

After about 2 hours, I got off at Ulcinj’s station and took a taxi to my hotel. I was dropped of at a flight of stairs leading up to a fortress and told to climb it. I knew my place was in the old city but didn’t realise it was in an elevated fortress. It wasn’t too long a climb and anyway the view from the top was rewarding.

I settled in quickly. The Albanian/Muslim family running it were nice. Actually, due to the Albanian influence, Ulcinj has a rather Oriental feel with kebab stands, mosques, veiled women and men walking hand-in-hand.

Exploring the old city, I soon learnt that there wasn’t much to it, unlike Kotor and the others. It was largely residential with homestays and some expensive restaurants. It was only worth a short visit but I later did appreciate being away from the maddening crowds on the “lowland” of Ulcinj.

The beach nearby was jam-packed and wasn’t my kind of scene. From the next days’ explorations, I realise that even Long Beach at 16km is also largely packed.
