Exploring Skopje

7 August 2014

The hostel unexpectedly gave a light breakfast. It was good enough to get me going for the exploration of central Skopje.

I set of at 0830 walking towards Macedonia Square and crossed the old stone bridge across the river to the so-called Albanian district. There were lots of newish monuments and statues some of which were looked very historic in design and others rather Soviet. On the far side of the river was a museum and several other buildings which have been designed in the old Greek/Roman style; very faux but not as tacky as what you’d get in some Chinese cities.

I stumbled upon the tourist map of the city posted around town. Most of the attractions are old buildings. At this stage of my travel, it wasn’t doing it for me. I decided to call it quits and the party was over by 0945!

One kinda has to look for the old builldings. A strong earthquake in the 1960s resulted in the destruction of much of Skopje and many buildings are plain and soulless.

Slowly I headed back to the hostel for a boring day on the computer making contact with my old network to find a job for my return. [Edit: I managed to land something three days later].  I couldn’t help thinking that this is the end of yet another adventure.
