We had a slow start. We set off by car late morning to the Hobby Aiport area where Kim said there was an aviation museum. He even had an address but when we go there, there was no museum.
We had a light lunch at Taco Bell where we used to internet to find out that he had been mistaken. There was a museum of sorts at the historic terminal building but it wasn’t of interest to us. The museum that he was interested in was on Galveston Island some distance away and we made our way there.
From the motorway and driving around we saw some very nice homes with a frontage to the water where they could park their boats. If only the water wasn’t brown. I don’t know how far one would have to take the boat out to get clear blue waters. Seems like such a waste of a boat.
The Lone Star Flight Museum was good enough for me for a walk around; it was more for Kim. We had a drive around Galveston before heading back to Houston stopping at USS Texas Historic Site. We got there after entrance to the ship had closed but the park was open for just enough time for us to have a quick look from the outside. What surprised me was that it was painted in a dark grey colour rather than the usual battleship grey.
The broader area is a historic battleground where the Texans defeated the Mexicans. Many fuel storage tanks are decorated with good murals of the Battle of San Jacinto.
Text continues after this gallery.
As we approached our hotel on the drive back, Kim spotted a motorcycle event held in a storage area underneath the motorway. We backtracked and found the place. Apart from less than a handful of Mexicans, everyone was African American. We were the palest faces there! Even for a non-bikie, some of the machines they had were pretty impressive.
We had subway for dinner (again) next to a Mexican supermarket which had a good range of Mexican ingredients and Catholic paraphenalia. The range of fruit wasn’t of the best quality and we had to go across the road to the other supermarket.
Overall, it was a nothing day in terms of experiences. We got to see a bit of Houston and the surrouding areas on this very cloudy day. But having researched what was available to do, there wasn’t anything else that interested me. We were back in our room at 2000 ready for a lie down.
