We had a lazy morning cafe-crawling in Chivay after checking out from our accommodation at 1000. First a leisurely coffee while sorting photos and writing my travel journal. Then a walk around town before lunch.
We returned to our hotel before 1300 to wait for our pickup which had been scheduled for 1330 to 1400. A knock sounded on the door around 1410. The man looked more like a construction worker and there was no shuttle. Anyway we followed him to the bus which was outside a restaurant where the other passengers were lunching.
Everyone but us were asleep on the journey back to Arequipa so I gathered that they had been day-trippers who had started at 0300. Not quite, they were hikers who started at 0500 in the canyon. They weren’t too interested in the stop at the highest point (lookout) and the alpacas/llamas so there was no stop for Vicunyas.
Despite that we got back to Arequipa after sunset and walked across the square to Los Andes B&B for our last night there.
We were both not hungry and stopped for three simple burgers from Burger King, shared amongst us. In fact, my tummy had been feeling strange for the last few days with no serious consequences but the burgers settled it nicely.
Off to bed early tonight due to an early flight tomorrow to Cusco. We had descended from Chivay to Arequipa just for the night before flying back up to a similar altitude in Cusco. Anyway, it was a welcome breather to be at a more comfortable altitude, but it wasn’t as if we were suffering.
