Shopping day in Bangkok

29 March 2018

Today was dedicated to a little more shopping, mainly clothing for the grandkids. I asked the taxi to take us to Pratunam Market. We got dropped off outside a building called City Complex. Even though it was a wholesale clothing place, there didn’t appear to be much of interest inside. Jo did pick up some bargains but we decided we would move on. We went next door where it was better but Platinum complex across the road had more options; it was better displayed but still very reasonable compared to last night on Patpong.

Actually, the whole area is dedicated to what they call “wholesale” where one gets a discount for multiple pieces. Prices are already lower than other markets and there is little room to move. I like Chatuchak Market but we didn’t have a weekend here, when it is at its best.

We grabbed a simple lunch here before leaving back for the hotel with Jo’s shopping in hand (and nothing for me). I realised later the real Pratunam Market was around the corner; pics on the internet suggest that it not air-con and we probably would have lost interest pretty quickly. I suspect it isn’t too different in product and pricing compared to the places we had shopped at.

After our afternoon rest, we dropped our laundry off and had a massage each. Mine was bad, the lady wasn’t strong nor accurate in her pressure-points and quite giggly.

Since I had had no success with shopping, I suggested to Jo that we go to Decathlon, the French sports superstore. There was stuff that she could buy for the kids so we ordered a Grab car to take us there across the river.

Decathlon, as usual, never fails to delight with good cheap stuff. We did a reconnaissance before having a simple dinner of noodle soup, and then returning to swoop in and make the purchases. I found some good hiking pants and shorts that fitted me well. If they had an extra pocket each, I would have described them as perfect but nevertheless they were good. Jo bought the most expensive item (THB1000/NZD45) for me as a present for taking her around Kuching, Malaysia and Thailand 🙂

We taxied back content with what we had seen, done, ate and bought in our two full days in Bangkok. We walked through Khao San again, and we tried a scorpion, shared a mango before returning to plan our packing for the departure tomorrow.

We shared a taste of the scorpion. It actually had a nice savoury flavour.
