Moving on to Sibiu

20 June 2018

Today we only have to get to Sibiu not so far away.  We had allowed the morning free here in Sighisoara.  We had a leisurely start before grabbing breakfast in the town square.  As we didn’t find anywhere that did breakfast per se, we settled on a toasted sandwich each; one with ham and cheese and another with kinda ratatouille and cheese.

After our midday check-out, we had to get to the bus station.  It wasn’t too far to walk but with Kim’s luggage and the midday heat, a taxi ride wasn’t a bad idea.  It was a short wait at the station before the minivan to Sibiu turned up.

We all rushed for seats but there were in fact a few spare in the end.  It was hot inside the vehicle and I was glad the ride took a little more than 1h30 rather than the 2h15 suggested by the guidebook.

Hopping off the minivan, we were a little early for the 1545 appointment we had made with the host at Casa Lucretia.  We refreshed with a drink and a cake right opposite before continuing by taxi.

Our accommodation was one building away from Sibiu’s main square.  It was accessed through a door leading into a courtyard of simple and somewhat rundown apartments but ours was very nicely refurbished.  We were very pleased with our choice and it meant we could sneak in and out anytime to explore and to rest.

We were able to skip lunch today.  Exploring the old city, we found St Mary’s Evangelical Church nearby.  We didn’t feel like climbing yet another tower so asked for a ticket to just the church.  The lady warned that the church was under renovation.  We acknowledged and paid up.  It turned out that the only accessible area was a little more than just the ticketing area.  Arrghhh!  But fortunately the ticket was only RON3 (a little more than NZD1).

We had better luck at the Roman Orthodox Cathedral nearby where the interior was just gorgeous with its frescoes.  The outside was gorgeous too with striped brickwork and domes, kinda like what I was expecting to see in Bulgaria.

As the evening set in, we grabbed dinner at one of the many cafes in the pedestrian mall.  We chatted to a local at the next table.  He likes the New Zealand All Blacks and especially the haka.  He looked at me and referred to the big dark strong rugby players!!!!  Yes, little me … or maybe it was because of my tighter t-shirt today … or maybe because I’m currently brown.

The TIFF (Transilvania Film Festival) was on tonight with a free screening in the main square.  It wasn’t a movie that I wanted to see so Kim went himself.  He was back quickly as it was one he had already seen.
