Back to school

8 July 2019

I started my second week of Spanish studies at the Don Quijote institute five minutes walk away.  Like their sister-school Enforex in Salamanca, the 4h per day was split between two teachers.  One teacher was awesome and could help students understand Spanish grammar with comparisons with French, German and Italian (the respective students’ native tongues).  The other spoke naturally without enunciating and wasn’t very creative in explanations.

So overall, I had three out of four excellent teachers between the two schools owned by the same company.  So I was quite pleased considering the mixed reviews I had seen on the internet.

Like the previous school, teachers took time to explain the difference between some Spanish Spanish and American Spanish.  After all, the latter is spoken by a lot more people!  Here in Tenerife, they also explained Canarian Spanish which often seemed like American Spanish.  And I was told that’s no accident because the sailing ships all had to pass through the Canaries as a final stop before heading to the new world.

So while Salamanca and Madrid are good places to learn pure Castillian or Spanish, Tenerife is a good place to learn resilient Spanish and be able to pick up mainland and American accents!
