Today we moved on from Miller’s Flat to Te Anau, a journey of about 2h30 driving. We left our hosts at 1100 making for a leisurely start, stopping for lunch at Lumsden.
We arrived at Te Anau around 1430, staying at the Amber Court motel. While our room was ready, the owners suggested we wait a little so they could assign us an upgraded room with more space and privacy (two bedrooms and lounge).
Jo’s friend and ex-colleague Sue dropped in for a chat. We left them to it and took a short afternoon drive to Manapouri (the lake rather than the hydro station which was closed to visitors currently anyway).
Sue joined us for dinner at Bailiez restaurant. She works for the Department of Conservation spending her days hiking through the tracks and inspecting the facilities to ensure they’re in tip-top condition. Sometimes, she is transported by helicopter.
It’s an awesome job for someone who loves the great outdoors! In Sue’s case it was perfect for her. She lives slightly outside of town in a place that’s solar-powered.
