A day in Sydney

Sightseeing

With the afternoon blocked off for a social with friends, I got started before 0800 with a breakfast of Portuguese Egg Tarts from the supermarket and a coffee.

I trammed to the Sydney Opera House where the cloudy weather didn’t help in terms of capturing some memories of the city’s landmarks.

Continuing to The Rocks and the Harbour Bridge, the weather had brightened up a little.  I walked across the bridge halfway before returning to my side of the city and slowly making my way back to the hostel.

It was a brief but pleasant repeat of Sydney’s icons.

Lunch

Henry picked me up at 1130, then a few others before taking us for lunch at Gabriel’s.  I met a few of their friends, some of whom had lived in Auckland before moving to Sydney.

After a meal of Sarawak Laksa, we were treated to a Watermelon Cake.  This was something new to me but quite well-known to them.  It’s an Australian-Vietnamese creation consisting of layers of cake, cream, and watermelon, topped with strawberries, pistachios and rose petals.  Visually stunning and also a delight in the mouth.

Back in the city in the evening, I took a wander of the Darling Harbour area.  The far side isn’t very nice at the moment, with much of it cordoned off for renovations.

I finished the day with an Indonesian meal.  The beef dendeng turned out to be more like a rendang.  If you ignore the misnomer, it’s actually quite nice.
