Today, I have a dive pre-booked, so it’s fortunate that the weather had taken a turn for the better.
We had hoped to arrange for Kim to go snorkelling but the place we found only accept Japanese speaking customers for today’s trip as they don’t have English-speaking staff on duty.
I got picked up by Hangout Divers before the appointed time of 0800. In short, I had two ordinary dives and an awesome one with three manta sightings. You can read about my dive here.
One of the divers on the boat was an elderly professor of Biosciences from Kobe, specialising in cosmetics and anti-ageing. He thought I was 35 years old, 21 years less than my actual age. Not bad for someone who doesn’t use products and hardly any sunblock.
Back around 1500, I rested in the room. Having not had much fruit or vegetables in recent days, I looked online and found what seemed to be a proper supermarket (rather than a convenience store) nearby.
It closes in less than an hour at 1800, so we set off promptly. At the JA Farmer’s Market Yaeyama, we were horrified at the price of almost everything. A 3.1kg slab of wagyu was NZD640, a mango for NZD43, a pineapple for NZD26. Even apples were around NZD3 each!
The only things we could justify buying was a lettuce! We left empty-handed and bought some bananas at another supermarket that we passed.
We had a light dinner of very unhealthy deep-fried chicken (Hokkaido style, which wasn’t anything special I thought) and fish and chips. We supplemented that with a box of sushi as supper and returned to the room for an early night.
We spotted a vending machine selling hot noodle soup and goat sashimi!
