Morning wander
Having decided not to go the volcanic geopark outside of town, we spent the day largely exploring the old town.
We started breakfast at a cheap eatery that sold steamed and baked dimsum items. They sold coffee, possibly Vietnamese style, very strong and sweet.
Once we had slightly over-eaten, we repeated the walk we did last night to have a better look a the crumbling shophouses, some of which had been overtaken by trees.
The area also had lots of nice front doors decorated with auspicious messages.

Chilling
After the heavy breakfast, I opted to stay indoors for a light lunch of fruit and muesli.
Today would be a holiday as we had been super-busy, doing around 27000 steps per day for each day in Guangzhou.
I lay in bed and took care of various admin on the phone and laptop, then deleted a lot of the bad photos from the previous days. The hotel room was well worth the money this time as I actually got to spend time in it.
Hainanese Chicken Rice
In the evening, we met up for another wander, this time in search of Wenchang Chicken or Hainanese Chicken Rice, which is the precursor of the Hainanese Chicken Rice found in Malaysia and Singapore.
I didn’t enjoy the meal. It was expensive, even at the cheapest of places. The chicken was not very meaty and I had concerns about how long it had been sitting around in the tropical heat.
The key difference for me is that the accompanying rice isn’t as seasoned as the version I’m used to. Some people say the condiments are different but at our eatery, a large assortment of condiments were available and you could easily make up something resembling that in Malaysia or Singapore.
Swee and Chen recommended the oyster pancake or omelette that they had for lunch. I thought I ought to try it. It was available at the place where I had my prawn fritter. While nice enough, I think it was far oilier than the versions I’ve had in Kuching and Taiwan.
