Nuremberg’s Altstadt

Going to the airport

I was happy to take public transport (NZD11 or EUR6 per person) to the airport for our midday flight but Kim was keen on an easier option.

Last year, the hotel offered us a ride for EUR20 (per car) but this year it was going to be EUR40.

So, we decided to try Uber, which gave a range of NZD45 to NZD60 (EUR26-34).  I was happy with the low end of the price range but not the high end, but there was no way we were going to know beforehand.

After a good breakfast, we summoned a car at 0740 and we arrived at the airport at 0820 with no traffic on a Sunday morning.  I was disappointed that the clear run still came back at the high-end of the quoted range.

Flying to Nuremberg

The kiosk check-in was swift but bag-tags are printed at the bag-drop rather than at the kiosk.

Security was reasonably swift also but I had chosen the wrong lane which didn’t have the updated scanners, meaning that I had to extract my laptop and LAG bag to present separately.

After more than 2h in the lounge with a complimentary 6 min upper back massage, we walked to one of the furthest gate to await our B737-8 Max to Nuremberg.

Turkish Airlines doesn’t seem to disguise their Max aircraft, clearly retaining that word on their Safety Information Card, unlike Singapore Airlines.  It was my third flight on this type and had previously found it quiet in front.  But overwing, it was surprisingly noisy for the latest technology aircraft.

The aircraft was not equipped with life rafts (normally stowed in the ceiling) and was rather noisy in the overwing area.

The butter had been placed next to the hot meal in advance and normally I would commend that was often it is too hard to spread.  Bt today, it was completed melted and leaking.

We landed in Nuremberg more or less on time around 1400 and got to the PrivatHotel Probst by underground around 1515.

We are here because I wanted to take Kim to Prague but couldn’t bear to pay the airfares.  We managed to get a good redemption ticket to Nuremberg instead and Prague is only 3h30 away by bus.  It seems an interesting enough place to visit for a short stay.

Exploring Altstadt

We heard that it had been 35 degC yesterday.  It was only 26 degC today with some humidity.

Being a Sunday afternoon, the Aldstadt (old city) area of Nuremberg was rather quiet.  We were at the southern end of the walled city and made our way through the centre past various notable churches (mainly Lutheran) and other buildings.

At the north end of the old city, we visited the castle and looked down on the old city.  We stopped short of climbing up one of the towers.

For dinner, we wanted to try an Irish pub which was quite economically price.  But with a big football game on, the place was packed.  We settled on another placed which did a good burger and salad.

It had cooled down significantly and was raining.  We walked back to our hotel avoiding the homes people that were taking shelter outside the shops.
