Poland after 20 years

Bus to Wroclaw

We were happy to leave the crowds of Prague today, heading to Wroclaw by bus.  We felt that we had had a good time seeing the major sights but didn’t take in any of its Jewish history.

We checked out at 1015 to walk to Florenc bus station.  The idea was to have enough time to buy some delicious lunches from the bakery outside the nearby metro station.

Unfortunately, the bakery was closed and we had to make do with the convenience store at the bus station itself.

The Polish Flixbus bus turned up on time at 1105 despite having originated in Milan.  It took us about 30 mins to get on to the motorway but the fast run didn’t last.  We then took a small road, with picturesque green woods for a while.

In fact, most of the route was on country roads with signage for a motorway crossed out (either under repair or construction).  I’m guessing, the route from Prague to Wroclaw isn’t a major one unlike to say, a bigger Polish city.

Around 1345 we crossed into Poland with no pomp or ceremony.  We had a small section of motorway briefly again before getting stuck in afternoon traffic entering Wroclaw.

What was meant to be a 4h30 journey was actually around 5h.  It was very smooth and fairly comfortable.

We disembarked in a new underground station attached to a fancy mall, about 8 mins walk from the Hotel Europejski.

Initial exploration of Wroclaw

We’re back in Poland after 20 years and I was looking forward to some yummy Polish food again.  After dropping our luggage, we enjoyed a free drink of spritzer in the hotel bar before walking down the road to a local diner called Rozowa Krowa which I had found on Google Maps.

The Polish food we had for an early dinner turned out to be awesome and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously.  We had a cold beet soup with egg, potato crumpet topped with goulash and cabbage roll filled with pork with tomato sauce.

We continued to the old market square and town hall for a wander.  It was nice to be in a picturesque old town (albeit significantly rebuilt without the crazy crowds.  It was a nice kind of busy.

We are in Wroclaw because the flights from Prague to England were far too expensive.  With time to spare, it made sense for us to see another place and put the fare difference into the bus fare, hotel and food instead!

We were back in our room around 1930 to finish the day.
