Fremantle and friends

With the 5 hour time difference between Auckland and Perth I was out of the hostel at 7am and caught up with a friend Carla for a juice at 8:15!  With a bit of wandering around to follow, I checked out of the hostel by the required time of 10am and spent most of the […]

Feeling young once more

As a solo traveller in Perth, I had to relive my youth at the backpackers, specifically one called 1201 East. It was too expensive for me to stay in a hotel, being just one person.  It was good to know that I can still feel at home in shared accommodation with shared facilities. It will […]

Is it Kiwi? Or is it Aussie?

Above: Our accommodation at Paradise Palms. This turned out to be a lazy day.   We didn’t feel obliged to be sucked into any of the other tourist traps around Cairns.  The warm weather was enough reason for coming over!  As it turned out, it rained …  but the temperature was still nice. Throughout our stay, […]

Up the coast

Today we went for a long drive to explore some of the recommended sights out of Cairns. We stopped briefly at some of the suburban beaches.  They are nice but not great.  The sand wasn’t golden and the sea wasn’t quite blue or green; but somehow the pictures look better than the reality.  Having said […]

Moore Reef

Our Air New Zealand hotel purchase came with an optional NZD$1 add-on (normally worth AUD$180) for an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef, specifically Moore Reef.  Naturally we took up this offer. Our Sunlover catamaran departed Cairns at 1000 bound for Moore Reef.  The 90 minute journey proved bumpy and I felt a bit sick but […]

Not such a bad place after all

Upon arrival we headed to our accommodation at Paradise Palms Resort, in our small Hyundai vehicle from Avis. After some rest, we hit town and went into Cairns.  Our impressions were really positive!  We couldn’t figure out why we’ve been given the thumbs down by most of our friends who always recommend Port Douglas instead. […]

Cars, bikes and fine wine

We picked up a rental car today to tour the sights outside of Adelaide.  First stop was Mt Lofty Summit to get a birds eye view of the city and surrounds. Next was nearby Hahndorf, pretty German town.     The highlight of the day for Kim was the National Motor Museum at Birdwood which […]

Back to the Festival City

We ferried back to the mainland in the morning.  Adelaide is like a ghost town during the public holidays.  There weren’t many places open for lunch apart from Chinatown.  The streets were deserted and most malls were closed.  So for us, Adelaide didn’t feel very festive at all despite being promoted as the Festival City!  […]

Penneshaw in the morning light

We didn’t really see Penneshaw yesterday as it as dark when we got in from our tripping around.  We also go to see our hostel in the morning light! After a quick wander, we reported at the ferry terminal for our 0830 departure back to Cape Jervis and then the bus ride to Adelaide.
